how? well, you simply give an answer which is neither a yes or a no.

ok, for example.
john:hey, did you take my pen!?
jack:did you see me taking your pen?
john:err, no.
jack:so?
john:ouh, sorry2, maybe someone else took it.

OR

john:hey, did you take my pen!?
jack:why would i want to take your pen.

OR

john:hey, did you take my pen!?
jack:what, your cheapo pen? who on earth would want to take that?
(say it with some 'force' and the person might take it with a scare)

another way is for fun, when that person knows you took his/her stuff.
john:hey, did you take my pen!?
jack:does my face look like someone who'd steal your pen?
john:haha, very funny. give it back.
